What is Supportive Counseling & How Will it Help Me as a Client?

     Supportive counseling is a person-centered approach to achieving reachable goals and dealing with short term anxiety and depression caused by daily life or life altering events.  A supportive counselor can assist you in achieving these goals and listen to you as you discuss issues that are causing you stress.  Supportive counseling can help improve relationships, personally and professionally, or help with stress related issues or lifestyle changes.  Assistance can be in the form of mental health, education, finances, vocational, spiritual, or begin a healthy lifestyle, whatever that may mean to you.  Supportive Counseling can be in the form of all or some of the following:

  • Active listening
  • Goal setting – implementing strategies to reach goals
              * Homework assignments
              * Journaling

  • Accountability
              *  To reach goals
              *  Budgeting
  • Learning coping skills
  • Discover who you are or become who you want to be

     Either life can control you or you can learn to control your life.  Everyone has a choice of how they respond or react to situations or other people.  You can surrender to it or face it with the tools gathered in supportive counseling sessions.

Supportive counseling is accepting, respectful and caring.  Supportive counselor will help you talk over your problems and figure out the best solution for you.

What is the Supportive Counseling Membership Program?

     Effective August 8, 2016, Garner Family Care Services will be offering Supportive Counseling in the form of a membership program.    Supportive Counseling is not covered under health insurance. Most offices charge between $50-$100 for 1 hour of counseling per visit.  We are offering an affordable way to receive the assistance needed and not break your bank account.  Pay one fee of $29.99 each month and come in as many times as needed, per availability.  Appointments will be needed to ensure your 30 min session at $10.00 or 1-hour session for $20.00.

If you are interested, then please let us know and we can get you the necessary forms to fill out so that you can sign up today and start making appointments.

Who is my Supportive Counselor?

April Sunshine Dupree

Supportive Counselor

     I am currently finishing my Masters of Arts in Professional Counseling at Liberty University.  I received my undergrad, Bachelors of Science at Liberty University in Psychology – Christian Counseling.  While working on my Masters and towards my licensure, I will be at Garner Family Care Services as the Supportive Counselor.

     I have interned at InterAct in Wake County as an advocate for Domestic Abuse.  I have also worked in a psychiatric hospital with adolescent girls on an acute lock-down hall as a Mental Health Tech.  I am extremely passionate about helping others in any way that I can.

     I have been married to my husband for 16+ years and we have a teenager.  We enjoy time at the lake and spending time as a family any way that we can.  When I am not working, studying, or writing papers for school, I enjoy reading and watching movies.
